An alleged instance of road rage led to attempted murder charges for a Tampa man after police say he fired a shotgun at a fellow motorist.
John "Andrew" Welden, the son of a Lutz fertility doctor, has been charged with first-degree murder and product tampering in Tampa's federal court. Federal prosecutors alleged Welden killed an ex-girlfriend's unborn child by tricking her into taking an abortion drug.
Trial began this week in Hillsborough County against 46-year-old Chunping Lin, who is charged with second-degree murder in the 2011 death of his wife Lixin Tian. Tian died in July 2011 after being removed from life support, following a May 2011 beating by Lin. Tian's cause of death was determined to be brain damage as a result of blunt-force trauma.
Sanjeev Grover, a Lutz physician, was sentenced this week to five years in federal prison for distributing the painkiller oxycodone outside the scope of his practice. Grover also was ordered to relinquish his medical license with the state and his Drug Enforcement Administration number. He had previously pleaded guilty.
Debra Jean Smith of Tampa was arrested and charged earlier this month with DUI manslaughter after a crash in Lutz. 71-year-old Helen Teresa Wallace of Clearwater was killed.
