St. Pete Man Facing Ninth DUI Charge After Allegedly Driving Drunk In Largo

drink-driving-808790_640.jpgA St. Petersburg man is facing felony drunk driving charges for the ninth time in his life after Largo Police stop him for driving with a broken headlight.

According to authorities, the 65-year-old man was driving through town early on the morning of May 21 when he was spotted by police allegedly driving his Jeep without using headlights. Largo Police were aided by Pinellas County Deputies in effecting the stop, as they say the defendant waited through an entire traffic light cycle and continued driving for a short distance.

The defendant eventually came to a stop in a gas station, pulling up to the pump before police could approach him. They say he smelled of alcoholic drink when they approached him and asked him for his driver's license. Officers say he told them he didn't have one, as it had been suspended in the course of a previous DUI case.

Allegedly glassy-eyed and unsteady on his feet, the defendant declined to participate in a field sobriety test or offer a sample for a breath tester. He was subsequently arrested and transported to the Pinellas County Jail, where the Ohio native was booked on one count each of DUI, driving with a suspended license, and refusal to submit to sobriety testing. He remains in custody in lieu of a $30,150 bond.

Local media reports that the defendant has had eight other DUI arrests, with the three prior prosecutions resulting in prison sentences. The defendant also allegedly has convictions for other crimes, including burglary and battery.
