OFAC Designates Duo Of Nicaraguan Officials For Alleged Human Rights Violations

nicaragua-890668_640.pngThe Federal government last week announced sanctions against a pair of officials from the Nicaraguan government over allegations that they have been involved in human rights abuses aimed at maintaining the Ortega administration in power.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated the duo for being part of a regime accused of hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries, hundreds of politically-motivated imprisonments, and tens of thousands of refugees escaping the administration's rampant brutality and corruption.

According to OFAC, one individual now under sanction is the current Commander in Chief of the Nicaraguan Army, which maintains a "parapolice" organization in the country that participates in politically-motivated violence and murder. OFAC says the military has long provided arms to the force, which has aided it in committing human rights violations against those individuals involved in protests in the spring of 2018.

The other individual now under sanction is the Nicaraguan Minister of Finance and Public Credit. Per OFAC, this man has arranged for a great deal of financial support for the Ortega administration over the course of many years.

As with all such designations, Americans are legally forbidden from conducting business with either party, and individuals and firms who continue to so associate with these men risk becoming targets of OFAC sanctions themselves.
