A Florida federal court has enjoined the owners of a website from selling an untested product they say cures COVID-19 (“coronavirus”) among many other diseases and conditions.
Per investigators, the site is operated by an organization referring to itself as a church, and it is operated by four men who are all related to each other. The substance they are allegedly marketing is sold in a two-part kit that, when combined, forms a strong bleach the vendors intend for oral administration.
Investigators say the product is marketed to cure not only coronavirus, but also HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, autism, brain cancer, and several other maladies. However, the substance has not been shown to do so in testing, they say. Rather than curing individuals, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says the solution causes nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and severe hydration.
Specifically, the civil complaint, which was filed by the Department of Justice in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, charges the defendants with labeling the substance with false and/or misleading information, making the substance a misbranded product. The Justice Department says the treatment marketed by the defendants has never been supported by any well-controlled clinical studies or any other credible scientific investigation.
Earlier this month the defendants were sent a letter by the FDA and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warning them that their activities violated the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the Federal Trade Commission Act, and other federal laws. Prosecutors say the defendants did not change their ways, choosing instead to state to federal officials that they would continue to market the product despite warnings from the federal government.
