A Tampa man released from jail as part of an initiative to reduce the spread of COVID-19 is again in custody after allegedly shooting to death another man the day after his release and remaining on the lam for the following three weeks.

According to Hillsborough County deputies, the 26-year-old man first arrived to jail on March 13 to face allegations by deputies that he had been in the possession of less than four grams of heroin and related paraphernalia. The defendant was held in jail for six days before being released as one of several facing charges in Hillsborough County who were turned out from custody in order to temporarily clear the jail of inmates facing low-level charges and reduce vectors for the spread of coronavirus.

Deputies say the defendant was free for less than a day when he encountered a 28-year-old man in the Progress Village area and shot him for reasons they say are related to the defendant's alleged gang membership. The wounds to the victim were severe, and he passed away at the scene.

Meanwhile, deputies say the defendant fled the area. A man who lives near the crime scene said the defendant ran into his home claiming he was being shot at. He made two phone calls at the request of the defendant, both of which were unanswered. The witness says he then took the defendant to a nearby gas station and dropped him off.

The defendant allegedly hid out in a recreational vehicle until April 13, when investigators compiled sufficient evidence to determine his whereabouts. He was again booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on several new charges including second-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm. He

remains in custody pending a bond of $280,500.
