Distress From Coronavirus Leads St. Pete Woman To Allegedly Fire Upon Police

A St. Petersburg woman is facing felony charges after Pinellas County authorities say distress from the COVID-19 pandemic led her to fire a weapon at a police officer sent to check on her.

Police say they were summoned to the home of the 63-year-old woman early last Tuesday morning by relatives who said she was making statements regarding coronavirus that caused them concern. Upon arriving at the residence, the officer says she opened the door and aimed a .38-caliber firearm at the officer and pulled the trigger.

The officer says the round went wide as he moved for cover. After letting loose the round, the defendant allegedly went back inside her home. She reappeared at the door a short time later, at which point officers ordered her out of her home. She complied with commands to lie on the ground with her hands behind her, but they say she soon began to resist. The woman was ultimately subdued and taken into custody.

Officers transported the Ohio native to the Pinellas County Jail, where she was booked on one count of resisting an officer without violence and one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. She continues to be held in lieu of a bond of $10,150.

Tampa Bay authorities urge area residents who are having difficulty coping with the coronavirus pandemic to dial 2-1-1 to be put in contact with a crisis center.
