Quintet Of Iranian Officials Designated By OFAC On Allegations Of Impeding Free And Fair Elections

Last week the Federal government issued sanctions against five officials of the Iranian government over allegations that they are interfering with the elections process there.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) named five Iranians serving on Iran's Guardian Council and its Elections Supervision Committee, whose job it is to determine which candidates may run and which may not.

According to OFAC, the vetting process the quintet engage in is of the political variety, as they are alleged to disqualify all candidates but those whose ideology aligns with that of the country's leadership.

Two of the men serve on the Guardian Council, appointed to their positions by Iran's Supreme Leader. One man is the Council's secretary, whom OFAC says has disqualified about half of the candidates sent before him, some of whom were already in office. The other man, who serves as a jurist on the Council, was also allegedly responsible for abolishing prosecutors from Iran's judicial system.

The three others are jurists on the Central Committee for Election Supervision. One man indicated he uses disparaging remarks against Iran's leader as part of the decisionmaking process. All three were appointed to their position by the leader of Iran, and all three are on record defending the purpose and existence of the council.

As a result of these designations, Americans are barred from knowingly conducting business with these three men, and those from other countries who do are at risk of OFAC sanction themselves.
