Allegedly High On Meth, Riverview Man Charged With DUI Manslaughter After Fatal Wreck On I-75

crash-1308575_640.jpgTroopers of the Florida Highway Patrol say a man was under the effects of methamphetamine when he initiated a fatal crash on I-75 last Friday.

Per authorities, the 31-year-old man was driving his 2017 Toyota Corolla southbound on I-75 in the pre-dawn hours when he began to overtake a police cruiser of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Allegedly driving at a high rate of speed, the man engaged the brakes in earnest so as to avoid the deputy's attention.

Rather than avoiding attention, troopers say he attracted it instead when he lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle swerved into the side of a 2009 Dodge Van next to it, sending both into the shoulder and ultimately off the roadway. The Corolla landed on its roof and struck several trees, while the van struck a tree head-on, mortally injuring the driver.

The 57-year-old woman who was driving the van was transported to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton for treatment of her injuries. Though she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, she expired later that day from her injuries.

Meanwhile, the Corolla's driver and a 31-year-old passenger were lightly injured in the accident and did not require emergency treatment. Neither individual was wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident.

The driver was arrested at the scene and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail. Allegedly under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the accident, the Florida native is facing charges of DUI manslaughter, driving on a suspended or canceled license, possession of cocaine, six counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of cocaine. He continues to be held in custody in lieu of a bond of $54,500.
