Tampa Man Facing Charges After Allegedly Setting Fire To Home Of Woman From Whom He Stole Jewelry

fire-1533113_1280-768x570.jpgA A Tampa man is facing attempted murder, theft, and arson charges after police say he set aflame the home of a woman from whom he had stolen jewelry a week prior.

The 55-year-old man was arrested last month for allegedly stealing rings from an elderly woman and subsequently pawning them. He allegedly stole the items on July 3.

Six days after the theft, police say the home of the elderly victim caught fire. Investigators say the fire began in the pre-dawn hours and spread quickly due to the suspect's introduction of gasoline to the area prior to lighting the fire.

The woman was asleep when the fire began, but the flames awoke her. As the fire consumed more of the residence, she threw down mattresses and other bedding materials to quell the fire and make an escape. However, she did not escape unscathed, as she suffered a second-degree burn to her foot.

The Kentucky native was arrested again on July 28 and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail. He's facing charges of falsifying a pawnbroker form, theft from persons 65 or older, dealing in stolen property, arson with injury, first-degree arson of a dwelling, and attempted felony murder. The suspect is currently being held without bond.
