DUI Suspect Charged With Battery After Allegedly Striking Deputy, Nurse In Emergency Room

A St. Petersburg man who was allegedly intoxicated when he instigated a multi-vehicle wreck on Treasure Island is facing felony battery charges after authorities say he struck a police officer and a nurse while being questioned in the hospital.

Investigators say the 21-year-old man was motoring along the Treasure Island Causeway in the late afternoon of July 14 when he lost control of his 2003 Ford Explorer near Paradise Boulevard. His SUV allegedly slid sideways across the median and struck a 2000 Volvo V70 piloted by a 59-year-old woman.

Both drivers were transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries, say deputies. However, while being questioned by deputies, the suspect allegedly resorted to violence, striking both a deputy and an emergency-room nurse before being subdued.

The suspect continues to be undergoing treatment in hospital, but deputies say he will face charges of battery on a law enforcement officer and battery on an emergency medical care provider. Deputies maintain that alcohol was a catalyst in the accident and say additional charges are likely once blood test results are in.
