Thonotosassa Man Already In Custody For Drug Charges Re-Arrested For Tampa Murder
A Thonotosassa man suspected in a fatal shooting in Tampa last week was charged with the crime while already in jail on a drug arrest only a few minutes after the alleged killing.
Tampa police say a local club was the site of a shooting on the afternoon of June 14. Per reports, a birthday party had just ended at the establishment and partygoers were dispersing when shots rang out. Surveillance videos captured a man firing shots at another man just before fleeing the scene in a white vehicle.
Only 10 minutes later a white Volkswagen attracted the attention of an officer on patrol when it proceeded through a stop sign a short distance away from the club without stopping. The officer began to follow the vehicle, watching as it pulled into a nearby gas station and the occupant exit it to place what was later identified as a stolen pistol into a trash recepticle.
Upon stopping the vehicle the officer said he discovered cannabis and cocaine within, prompting him to arrest the 24-year-old driver. Meanwhile, investigators began to comb the scene of the shooting and conduct interviews with witnesses.
Investigators quickly connected the driver and the shooting, as one witness gave them the suspect’s name. Hillsborough authorities realized almost immediately that this man was already in custody, and he was re-arrested and charged in the murder.
The Florida native is currently being held without bond on charges of cocaine possession, evidence tampering, cannabis possession, carrying a concealed firearm, and first-degree murder.
