Pasco Man Facing Drug Charges After Fight That Wounded Off-Duty Tampa Officer

A Dade City man is facing charges in Pasco County after he was involved in a physical altercation with a reserve officer that left the officer with a minor gunshot wound.

Per authorities, the 33-year-old man was involved in a hit-and-run car accident on Wednesday, which was witnessed by a reserve officer of the Tampa Police Department. The reserve officer followed the suspect, eventually stopping the suspect’s vehicle on a dirt road about two miles away.

The officer says that they both exited their respective vehicles and began arguing with each other. The argument became violent he said, and the officer produced his firearm. The men then wrestled for control of the gun, which discharged as they were fighting. The round struck the officer in the shoulder, allowing the suspect to disengage from the fight and flee on foot.

The suspect was apprehended a short time later. Meanwhile, the officer was taken by helicopter to hospital where his non-life-threatening injuries were tended to. The officer is currently under internal investigation for the altercation, which Tampa PD says is standard procedure when an officer discharges his weapon.

The Zephyrhills native was subsequently booked into the Pasco County Jail on several drug trafficking charges. He was not charged with a crime in relation to the struggle with the reserve officer, as the officer did not identify himself as such during the altercation. The suspect continues to be held in lieu of a bond of $109,000.
