Haines City Man Facing Charges After Allegedly Striking Cop Car With Riding Lawnmower While Drunk

800px-John_Deere_lawn_mower.JPGA Haines City man added to the lore of odd Florida crime when he allegedly struck a police cruiser with a riding lawnmower while in a state of intoxication.

Polk County authorities say a local police officer responded to a loud noise outside the convenience store he just entered to discover a 68-year-old man driving a riding lawnmower away from his newly-damaged vehicle.

Drawing the obvious conclusion, the officer stopped the man to investigate the situation. Per the officer the man admitted striking the police car with his riding lawnmower, saying that he had not actually damaged it. As the conversation continued the officer says he also admitted to being drunk.

The suspect was taken into custody shortly thereafter and transported to the Haines City Police Department building. Upon arriving he allegedly claimed that he had been poisoned by officers and demanded to be taken to a hospital. He was then taken to Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center in Davenport, where he was subjected to a breath test for alcohol, allegedly registering a BAC of 0.241%. A subsequent blood test detected cocaine, which he says was administered to him by police.

The suspect was booked into the Polk County Jail on charges of DUI and refusal to submit to a DUI test after license suspension (his license has been suspended since 1978). He was released late last week after posting a bond of $3,000.
