Pinellas County authorities say a Clearwater man stole his friend's car while drunk and caused an accident from which he subsequently fled.
The 28-year-old man allegedly climbed into his friend's Mercedes Benz early last Monday morning while it was being refueled at a local filling station at Chestnut Street and N Fort Harrison Avenue. Proceeding eastbound on Court Street, investigators say he struck the rear of a BMW traveling in the same direction near Hillcrest Avenue.
Investigators say he did not remain to survey the damage, choosing instead to depart the area. Police caught up with him shortly after at a local hotel. As he was injured when located by police, they transported him to Morton Plant Hospital for treatment of his injuries before taking him into custody.
Meanwhile, two passengers in the BMW he allegedly struck were taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg. The male passenger was listed in critical condition, while the female was treated for unspecified injuries.
The New Jersey native was booked into the Pinellas County Jail later that morning on charges of grand theft auto, leaving the scene of a crash involving injury, DUI with serious bodily injury, two counts of driving with a suspended or revoked license, cocaine possession, possession of paraphernalia, and violation of probation on a DUI charge. He continues to be held without bond.
