Tampa Man Charged With Vehicular Homicide In Connection With Deadly April Crash

A Tampa man who allegedly caused a fatal car accident last April was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the incident said the Florida Highway Patrol after taking him into custody last week.

The 55-year-old man was allegedly driving his 2008 Chevrolet SUV eastbound on SR 54 at around half past two o'clock that afternoon when troopers say he failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Duck Slough Boulevard.

In the intersection at the time was the 2009 Honda coupe piloted by a 17-year-old Mitchell High School junior. Troopers say she was in the eastbound lane, positioning her driver's side door squarely in the path of the oncoming SUV hurtling toward her.

Troopers say the resulting crash was fatal to the 17-year-old. The suspect was also injured in the crash and was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and bloodwork needed for the crash investigation.

The SUV contained two other men, one of which, a 27-year-old Tampa man, fled the scene. Police caught up with him a short time later and arrested him on charges of tampering with or fabricating evidence and possession of a controlled substance, resisting an officer without violence, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Meanwhile, a wait for blood testing results and a heavy workload conspired to delay the suspect's arrest until last week. The Virginia native was arrested by deputies and booked into the Pasco County Jail on charges of vehicular homicide, DUI accident with death, and DUI with property damage. He remains in custody pending a $100,500 bail.
