Spring Hill Man Arrested For DUI In Relation To Fatal Wreck In October

Authorities made an arrest last week in connection with an October accident in which an allegedly intoxicated man killed a motorcyclist.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers say the 30-year-old Spring Hill man was driving a 1997 Ford SUV on U.S. 19 on October 25 when his vehicle collided with the 2008 Kawasaki Ninja piloted by a 31-year-old man.

Per investigators, the motorcycle was in the left lane as the suspect approached from the opposite direction. The man on the motorcycle attempted to execute a U-turn, putting him in the path of the suspect's vehicle.

The SUV did not stop, causing it to strike the motorcycle and run it over, along with its rider. The rider was grievously injured in the crash, necessitating his transportation to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. However, despite the staff's best efforts, he expired at the hospital.

Meanwhile, the SUV driver was examined by troopers at the scene and released. At the time of the accident troopers said that alcohol was not a catalyst in the event, leading them to release the driver without charge.

However, in the intervening weeks and months investigators developed evidence to the contrary, saying that cannabis and a blood-alcohol content of 0.136% made the accident a criminal act. The Massachusetts native was arrested on March 20 and booked into the Pasco County Jail on charges of DUI accident with death and resisting or obstructing an officer without violence. He continues to be held in lieu of a bond of $255,000.
