Odessa Man Convicted For Allegedly Defrauding Medicare, TRICARE Of $1.5 Million

After a four-day trial, a South Florida man was found guilty by a jury in Federal court for allegedly defrauding Medicare, TRICARE, and private insurance firms.

Federal prosecutors say the 55-year-old Odessa man was part of a sizable conspiracy to submit false and fraudulent claims to government and private insurers between 2012 and 2015. They say he utilized his role as a pharmacist at a New Port Richey pharmacy to aid in submissions totaling up to several thousands of dollars for a single tube of scar cream or pain cream.

According to prosecutors, once private insurers began to suspect a problem and ended their relationship with the defendant, he allegedly agreed to be the straw owner of a different pharmacy in Miami, where his alleged co-conspirators continued the fraudulent activity.

The defendant allegedly reaped a significant reward in the course of his involvement in the scam. Per prosecutors, he received around $1.5 million over the course of his involvement, with which he purchased a home and several luxury vehicles.

On January 10 the defendant was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud, three counts of health care fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. He is scheduled to be sentenced in mid-March in the chambers of U.S. District Judge Moreno of the Southern District of Florida.

The case was investigated by the Medicare Fraud Strike Force, which is a team composed of personnel from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
