University Cop Charged With Sexual Battery And Extortion Over Alleged Abuse Of Family Member

police-officer-111115_640.jpgPolk County authorities say a now-former university police officer repeatedly sexually assaulted and extorted a relative over the course of several years.

Investigators say the 57-year-old Auburndale man had been a police officer for the local university for about two years, coming from a 17-year stint as an officer with the Nashville Metro Police Department.

Per authorities, a relative of the officer contacted them to report that she had been sexually abused on a regular basis for over six years. He began the systemic abuse in 2012, she said, but the abuse became significantly worse when the officer moved to the area to work at the university.

The woman showed investigators a litany of text messages sent since July, they say, including explicit images of her he took and threatened to release if she didn't cooperate. He also threatened her with physical violence and death, she said.

She said the situation became intolerable in September when she began to legitimately fear for her personal safety. However, she still waited to act in an effort at avoiding the stress it might cause her family, and due to the fact that he controlled her bank account and owns her vehicle.

Deputies of the Polk County Sheriff's Office arrested the officer last Thursday and booked him into the Polk County Jail on on charges of sexual battery, extortion, and aggravated stalking of a family member. The officer resigned from the university police force upon his arrest. There is no word from the sheriff's office regarding his bail, if any, or custody status.
