St. Petersburg authorities say an early-morning altercation led to a deadly argument last Thursday, and a Plant City man is now in custody to face murder charges as a result.

Police say they received reports of an argument and gunshots from Midtown on the city’s South side early on November 1. Upon responding to the calls, officers say they encountered Christina Veronica Rush with a critical gunshot wound in the backyard of a nearby residence. Officers immediately began first aid until paramedics could arrive. Rush was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital, where she passed away as a result of her wounds.

After a brief investigation, St. Petersburg authorities identified Marco Nicholas Murray as the prime suspect in the slaying, and he was arrested later in the day on Thursday. Though police have been tight-lipped as to details, they did confirm that Murray and Rush were at least acquainted.

Murray was arrested in Plant City and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail, where he was subsequently transferred to Pinellas County and booked into jail there. He faces a charge of second-degree murder in addition to charges of possessing contraband in a detention center, felon in possession of a firearm, and six probation violations, including two counts of possession of cocaine, two counts of felon in possession of a firearm, possession of cannabis, felonious possession of a handgun, and possession of cocaine. He is currently being held without bond.
