Pinellas County deputies say an off-duty Palm Harbor firefighter was driving his private vehicle while intoxicated last weekend.
According to the sheriff's department, deputies witnessed the man driving on U.S. 19 near Klosterman Road at a speed at least 20 miles per hour above posted limits. The man was also failing to keep to a single lane, they say, allegedly almost striking another vehicle in the process.
Deputies say they initiated a traffic stop of the man, who, upon their arrival at the car, displayed obvious signs of intoxication. They noted a pervasive odor of alcoholic drink from within the vehicle, and described the man's glassy, bloodshot eyes and alcohol-laden breath. According to deputies, the man's performance of field tests to determine sobriety were strikingly inadequate.
Upon administering a breath test, the man's blood-alcohol content was gauged to be 0.227% and 0.221%, which was above Florida's statutory level for intoxication, which is 0.08%. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Pinellas County Jail early the next morning on a single count of driving under the influence. The man was released on his own recognizance later that morning.
