Gainesville Man Charged with Attempted Murder after Allegedly Shooting Father and Infant Child
A Gainesville man is in custody after authorities say he became angered at a man kissing his child goodbye.
According to investigators, Torrance Lee was parked before the home of Darrell Jerrand Wilson prior to dropping off his 1-year-old son with him and his girlfriend, with whom Wilson is believed to be in a romantic relationship.
Police say Lee kissed his child goodbye, causing Wilson to become incensed. They say he grabbed the child from Lee’s arms, but the child was subsequently retrieved by Wilson’s girlfriend, who is also the child’s mother.
She returned the child to Lee while Wilson produced a firearm. Wilson allegedly fired shots at both Lee and his child, whom he held in his arms at the time. One round struck Lee in the abdomen, and the second grazed the child’s face. Authorities say Wilson is now in stable condition at a local hospital, while the child’s injury was deemed to not be a threat to his life.
Wilson subsequently returned into his home, where police apprehended him a short time later. Allegedly claiming that he acted in self defense due to being placed in apprehension by the victim, whom he said approached him in a menacing manner, Wilson was arrested and booked into the Alachua County Jail on two counts of attempted murder. His bond was set at $500,000.
