Two Former Florida Gator Football Players Agree to Plea Deal in Alleged Credit Card Fraud Scheme

football-560467_640.jpgA pair of the nine now-former Florida Gators football players accused of credit card fraud came to an agreement with prosecutors on a plea deal that will keep them out of prison.

Jordan Smith and Kadeem Telfort pled no contest to one count each of scheming to defraud, a third-degree felony, on March 16. Spared from time behind bars, the duo were both sentenced instead to two years of probation and court costs of just over $500.

According to investigators, Smith was the leader of the alleged fraud operation, initially facing 9 separate felony charges. Investigators accused him of charging around $6,000 to stolen credit-card accounts for expenses including rent, parking, and books. Telfort, who was initially charged with 30 separate felony counts, was alleged of stealing around $1,500 from the accounts of about 10 different people.

Both men were four-star recruits - Smith hailing from Georgia and Telfort from Miami. However, neither played a single down of football for the Gators. Telfort has already transferred to a junior college in western Kansas to continue playing football.

Smith and Telfort were the only players who were not afforded pre-trial intervention. They were among the four players who did not rejoin the team, as one entered the NFL draft and the other transferred to a different institution.
