A Sarasota chiropractor notable for a popular referral service was arrested by Manatee County deputies last week and is facing charges of drunken driving after being observed driving his sports coupe in excess of 100 miles per hour.

Dr. Gary Kompothecras was stopped in the early morning hours of February 8 as he was driving southbound on Interstate 75 at the Trooper JD Young Bridge. According to the arrest record, a Manatee County deputy observed Kompothecras driving his silver Porsche at excessive speed, which he says he subsequently measured and confirmed with a radar device.

According to the arresting officer, Kompothecras admitted to drinking a quantity of wine at a popular Tampa casino but left after having a disagreement with his wife.

The report continued by describing the series of field-sobriety tests the arresting deputy administered to Kompothecras. The 57-year-old chiropractor allegedly told the arresting deputy that a medical issue with his feet prevented him from properly executing tests that measured balance, which, according to the deputy, Kompothecras did not pass.

The arresting deputy said that Kompothecras, who appeared to him to be intoxicated, was unable to recite the alphabet backwards with his eyes closed either. He declined to submit to a breath test for alcohol and was subsequently arrested.

Kompothecras was booked into the Manatee County Jail on a single count of driving while intoxicated. He posted a $500 bond and was released later that day.
