Attracting the attention of Florida’s finest by allegedly piloting his vehicle at night without using its headlights, the president of Hillsborough Community College’s Ybor City campus is now facing drunken driving charges.

Troopers say they were in the midst of a traffic stop on Interstate 4 and Mango Road when they witnessed a vehicle pass them without moving over a lane to give stopped emergency vehicles a safety margin as mandated by Florida law.

Officers decided to pursue the vehicle, saying they subsequently witnessed it drive through an intersection against a red light. Effecting a stop of this vehicle, they say the encountered Shawn H. Robinson behind the wheel, on whom they say they subsequently administered a field-sobriety test.

The troopers at the scene say they noted a distinct odor of alcohol upon Robinson’s breath, and they say he had difficulty answering questions posed to him about where he had come from and where he was going. Subsequent blood-alcohol testing allegedly showed saturation levels of 0.171% and 0.181%, both of which are better than double the level at which the state presumes impairment.

Robinson was arrested and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on a single charge of driving under the influence. The Missouri native bonded out several hours later after posting a $500 bond.
