A fatal crash over a month ago yielded an arrest for DUI manslaughter last week, as Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office investigators say a Gibsonton woman drove over 100 miles per hour in the moments leading up to the incident.

Police say Jasmin Galicia was piloting her 2014 Cadillac CTS northbound on East Bay Road at around midnight on April 8 when, at the roundabout at Nundy Avenue, Galicia lost control and struck the Ford F-150 driven by Carlos Gutierrez, who was on the opposite side of the roundabout and yielding to traffic.

Galicia, whose vehicle was allegedly traveling 103 miles per hour at the time, failed to safely negotiate the roundabout. Upon encountering the curb, the CTS took to the air, striking Gutierrez’s F-150 on the driver’s side, sending it into a spin.

Gutierrez’s F-150 came to a stop upon striking a nearby Toyota Camry. Gutierrez did not, however, as he was subsequently launched from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, and he expired at the scene.

Although Galicia’s passenger, her husband Rene Pineda-Martinez, was extracted from the CTS with a broken leg, Galicia was not known to be injured. Upon her arrest, Galicia was subjected to a blood test to determine alcohol level, which officers say returned a result of 0.118%.

The 24-year-old Gibsonton resident was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on Orient Road on charges of vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter, DUI with serious bodily injury, and DUI with property damage or personal injury. She was released shortly afterward upon posting a bond of $60,500.
