Brandon Man Charged with Vehicular Homicide for Fatal Crash in 2016

A Brandon man has been charged with vehicular homicide for a death they say he caused in the course of a head-on car collision.

The Hillsborough State Attorney’s Office charged 23-year-old Jacob Robin Albarracin with a single count of vehicular homicide last week. State’s attorneys say that Albarracin borrowed a Toyota Camry early on July 17th of last year and drove it eastbound on Broadway Avenue at a high rate of speed.

According to reports taken at the time, Albarracin failed to properly negotiate a curve in the road. His vehicle allegedly crossed the center line just before six o’clock that morning as a result and collided with another Toyota Camry piloted by 31-year-old Esther Jean.

Jean, who was just days away from her 32nd birthday, did not survive the encounter, as she perished upon impact. Investigators say her fate was sealed, as no maneuver she could have undertaken would have saved her from the wreck, as they say Albarracin’s vehicle was traveling at 75 miles per hour at the point of collision.

Albarracin was seriously injured as a result of the crash. After being extracted from his crumpled vehicle by first responders, the New Jersey native was spirited to Tampa General Hospital. Doctors went to work on him upon his arrival, ultimately removing his spleen and a portion of his small intestine to save his life.

Albarracin, who lists his occupation as a laborer for a local construction firm, was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail last Wednesday. He remains there in lieu of a $35,000 bond.
