OFAC Sanctions Several Entities And Individuals For Alleged Involvement In Iran Nuke Program

The federal government announced sanctions last week against several different individuals and organizations linked to Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile program.

According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the move is another step in adding pressure to the country to eliminate its nuclear weapons program, which is also targeted for sanctions by the United Nations.

Last week’s designations include three Deputy Directors of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) and several of its subsidiaries. Also sanctioned were firms supplying equipment to the country for its ballistic missile production, which is carried out under the auspices of Iran’s Aerospace Industries Organization (AIO). Senior officials in the program were sanctioned as well.

Some of those designated last week are alleged to be part of the AEOI, which was first designated earlier this year. Three of the organizations designated last week are subsidiaries of AEOI as well.

Also designated was an Iranian industrial firm and its subsidiary, which produces diesel engines. OFAC says the company has provided dual-use technology to the ballistic missile program. Several shareholders and officers within the firm are now under sanction as well.

In addition to the above, OFAC also added five more Iranian scientists to the ranks of those sanctioned.

As with all such sanctions, those designated by OFAC are prohibited from accessing their property in the jurisdiction of the United States, and those conducting business with an already-designated party may themselves become targets of OFAC sanctions.
