"Unloaded" Gun And Alcohol Allegedly Lead to Death In Accidental Largo Shooting

A Largo man was intoxicated and wrongly believed a firearm was not loaded when he allegedly shot and killed a woman in his home.

The 42-year-old man said he had been drinking on Saturday evening when he began to manipulate a semi-automatic pistol as he sat in his living room. Thinking he had unloaded the firearm earlier, the defendant allegedly pointed the piece at the woman and squeezed the trigger to prove it.

Unfortunately, the defendant's belief was entirely mistaken. One round from the weapon struck the woman in the chest, inflicting grievous injuries. The defendant summoned emergency responders via 9-1-1 to his mobile home park, but their efforts were in vain as the victim expired at the scene.

The Illinois native was booked into the Pinellas County Jail early the next morning on a single count of manslaughter. He continues to be held in custody in lieu of a bond of $500,000.

Police are not issuing any information on the victim due to their interpretation of state laws.
