A Tampa man is facing attempted murder charges after Hillsborough County authorities say he is responsible for the June shooting of another man.

Detectives say the 30-year-old man shot and wounded another man on June 29, leaving him with serious injuries. They would not speculate as to the reasons behind the encounter nor release the name of the alleged victim.

Police say both the victim and the defendant fled the scene at that point, and the victim subsequently reported to 9-1-1 that the defendant escaped them. Deputies arrested the defendant approximately a mile away at a convenience store on Dover Road.

Though the defendant was stopped, officers say they sent for and obtained a search warrant for the defendant’s vehicle. The search pursuant to the warrant allegedly uncovered a firearm within that they say matched the caliber of the shell casings discovered at the scene of the shooting.

The native Puerto Rican was arrested at the scene of the search on June 29 and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on charges of resisting an officer without violence, giving a false name to law enforcement, attempted second-degree murder, and felon in possession of a firearm. He continues to be held in custody without bond.

Authorities did not indicate why they opted to wait to release news of the arrest until Friday.
