A Tampa man is heading back to jail in Hillsborough County after a shootout with Georgia police while allegedly attempting to flee the area after a fatal shooting.
The 37-year-old man is the suspect in a shooting on Tuesday at a local body shop just after noon. Police say they arrived to investigate a 9-1-1 report of the shooting to discover the remains of a 29-year-old man in a bay of the garage.
The following day Georgia police were called to a home in Lakeland on the report of a home invasion. Police say the defendant shot at the residents of the home and attempted to steal a car. Failing in this endeavor, the defendant allegedly left the area in a stolen Audi and proceeded to steal a minivan before attracting the attention of police.
Police tried to stop the defendant, but he allegedly continued on before escaping the van and fleeing on foot. They say he shot at pursuing police as well, grazing one, before being apprehended. Both the defendant and the homeowner in Georgia were treated for their wounds, along with an officer who was released shortly after treatment for a grazing wound from a bullet.
The defendant has an arrest record in Hillsborough County involving drug and robbery charges. He was released in February after serving time in Florida prisons for robberies in the Tampa Bay area. The defendant served ten years on the convictions, with another five years of supervised release still ahead of him.
