OFAC Sanctions Five Iranian Ship Captains Allegedly Involved In Transporting Gasoline To Venezuela

iran-1151139_640.jpgLast month the Federal government announced sanctions against a handful of Iranian tanker ship captains allegedly involved in transporting gasoline to the Maduro regime in Venezuela.

On June 24 the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) named the five captains who allegedly piloted vessels owned by two previously-sanctioned Iranian entities they say delivered the finished gasoline and gasoline components in contravention of global sanctions.

Late last fall the Iranian government implemented gasoline rationing and increased the price per gallon by half again. The drastic measures were not well received by the Iranian people, leading to protests against the acts. In response, Iranian security forces conducted a brutal crackdown, allegedly killing about 1,500 of its own citizens, including women and children.

In light of severe gasoline shortages, the Iranian government continues to ship badly-needed gasoline to the equally brutal Maduro regime, charges OFAC. The Office notes that proceeds from sales of gasoline to the Maduro government are likely to be used for acts of terror in countries around the world and not for the betterment of the Iranian people.

The five sanction captains are all Iranian nationals and range in age from 34 to 58. All five of the men are listed as subject to secondary sanctions as well.
