A Valrico man may soon be facing DUI charges after Hillsborough County authorities say he initiated a crash that injured two deputies.
Investigators say the 25-year-old man was driving on U.S. 60 in the early morning hours of May 10 with three friends as passengers. As his 2016 Chevrolet Impala approached the intersection with Church Street, they say he encountered a pair of unmarked Hillsborough County police vehicles with two deputies within standing on a grassy median. The pair of deputies were conducting DUI investigations by monitoring passing traffic.
Per the deputies, the suspect’s vehicle jumped the curb and struck both vehicles, first striking one head-on before sideswiping the other. Investigators say the deputies in both vehicles were injured in the collision, with one sustaining a broken ankle and the other enduring non-life-threatening injuries.
In addition to the deputies, two of the passengers were injured in the suspect’s vehicle, including the suspect himself. All four of the vehicle’s occupants were taken to hospital from the scene.
In a subsequent interview the suspect allegedly told investigators that he had fallen asleep at the wheel. However, deputies have not indicated whether a blood test for alcohol was conducted on the suspect at the time of the incident.
No booking information is available for the suspect at the time of this writing.
