Fatal Wrong-Way Crash In Largo Yields DUI Manslaughter Charge Against Tampa Woman

640px-Car_crash.jpgA Tampa woman is accused of initiating a fatal car crash while drunk after authorities say she drove the wrong way on a highway through Largo.

Police say the 27-year-old woman initially attracted their attention in the early morning of May 3 after drivers on U.S. 19 reported to 9-1-1 a Nissan Murano traveling south in the northbound lanes. She allegedly passed a pair of marked Pinellas County Sheriff's Office vehicles at a high rate of speed as well.

Despite deputies' best efforts at stopping her, they say she continued on until she reached 66th Street North, where she allegedly struck another vehicle head on. The crash was severe, killing the front-seat passenger outright and seriously injuring the driver and a preteen child in the back seat.

The defendant was also injured in the crash, as deputies discovered her lying unconscious in the wreckage. She was taken by helicopter to a hospital for treatment, while a child passenger was transported to hospital by ambulance. Deputies say the defendant smelled of alcoholic drink, and they say they discovered containers of hard seltzer in the vehicle as well. A subsequent blood test at the hospital allegedly yielded an alcohol level of 0.202%, which is almost three times beyond the Florida statutory limit.

The Florida native was released from the hospital after a few hours and immediately arrested. She was subsequently booked into the Pinellas County Jail on charges of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, child neglect, and two counts of DUI causing serious bodily injury. She was released after posting a bond of $70,000.
