St. Pete Woman Facing Duo Of Vehicular Homicide Charges After Deadly Crash On I-275

A St. Petersburg woman is facing two homicide charges after authorities say she caused a car crash that took the lives of a pair of teenage girls.

Florida troopers say the 18-year-old woman was driving her 2003 Toyota Camry north on I-275 just before dawn on February 8. Also aboard the vehicle were two teenage girls, one 17 years of age and the other a year younger.

Also driving along I-275 that morning was a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado carrying two passengers, one 38-year-old man another man who was five years younger.

According to troopers, the defendant's car crossed from the farthest left lane into the path of the truck in an effort at taking an upcoming exit ramp. The defendant's car hit the truck, spinning the car out of control and into a pair of pine trees adjacent to the road.

The three occupants of the Camry were taken to hospital and treated for injuries of varying degrees of seriousness. The two younger females in the car were mortally injured however, expiring shortly after arrival. The defendant survives and spoke with troopers after the accident.

The two men in the truck were uninjured, troopers inform.

Prosecutors say blood tests taken at the hospital showed the defendant's blood-alcohol content at 0.066%, which is slightly below Florida's legal limit of 0.08%. Additionally, they say troopers noted a smell of marijuana on her clothing at the time of the accident.

The defendant was arrested on February 27 and booked into the Pinellas County Jail on two counts of vehicular homicide. She continues to be held in jail pending a bond of $200,000.
