Fresh Off A 19-Year Prison Term, St. Pete Man To Return To Custody To Serve New Sentence For Murder

A man who spent nearly two decades in prison on a murder conviction is again facing prison time, this time after pleading guilty to a killing the Pinellas County authorities say he carried out only months after his release.

Prosecutors say the 51-year-old man is to blame in the 2014 death of his 57-year-old wife, whom they say he bludgeoned to death in their home. The defendant married the victim in the fall of 2014, but only two months after the wedding he allegedly called a relative telling them of the death.

The relative alerted authorities, who say they entered the home to find his wife's body on the floor. The defendant had allegedly fled the residence by then, but he was apprehended after a state-wide alert. Police arrested him near Daytona Beach after the car experienced mechanical problems and stalled.

The legal proceedings against him began in earnest, but judges ruled him incompetent to stand trial until January of last year. Last week he pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder in exchange for a promise by prosecutors that they would not ask for the death penalty at his sentencing.

The New York native allegedly stabbed his girlfriend over a dozen times in 1993 after a fight between them about finances. After stabbing both her and her son, the defendant allegedly fled the scene only to be picked up later and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and grand theft. He received a sentence of 25 years in prison in 1995 and was released early in 2014.
