First-Degree Murder Charges Filed Against Tampa Man For Allegedly Supplying Fatal Dose Of Heroin

Shortly after her former boyfriend agreed to a plea deal to avoid a manslaughter charge in her death, a Tampa man is facing a first-degree murder charge for allegedly supplying the heroin that led to the death of a 17-year-old girl.

According to police, the trio met last April at the home where the boyfriend lived with his grandparents. They spent the day there but for two trips - one to a nearby pawn shop, and the other to a residence near the home.

The residence visited by the three was once a home where the defendant lived, says prosecutors. The boyfriend told authorities that he and the victim took heroin that evening and fell asleep shortly after. The boyfriend said he woke during the night to check on the victim, who was allegedly still breathing but could not be roused.

A second check just before dawn found the victim cold and pale, say authorities. The grandparents alerted 9-1-1, who transported her to a local hospital. She died in hospital three days later, and the boyfriend was indicted on the death last fall.

The wheels of justice ground on slowly until last week, when a trial was set to begin. However, the boyfriend agreed to plead to lesser charges, yielding only a year in jail. Within hours of the pleading, deputies arrested the defendant.

The Georgia native was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on a count of possession of a controlled substance and a count of first-degree murder. He remains in custody pending the posting of a $252,000 bond.
