College Student Facing Charges After Allegedly Leaving The Scene Of A Fatal Accident In Tampa

A cyclist is dead and another man is facing drunk driving charges after a deadly crash in Tampa in early March.

Tampa police say a 22-year-old local man was driving his 2016 Jeep Wrangler eastbound on W Gray Street just after dusk on March 4 when he encountered a cyclist traveling in the same direction on the shoulder of the road.

Rather than yielding sufficient space to the cyclist, police say the defendant struck him with his vehicle, inflicting grave injuries. However, rather than staying to report the accident or render aid to the stricken cyclist, police say he fled the scene.

Meanwhile, first responders arrived to help the cyclist, but the injuries proved mortal at the scene. Police say the defendant returned to the scene just under one hour later, identifying himself as the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident. According to investigators, damage to his vehicle appeared consistent with those to the parts of the vehicle found at the scene of the accident.

Officers performed a field sobriety test on the defendant, which they say he returned a poor showing. They say also that he smelled of alcoholic drink, slurred speech, glassy and bloodshot eyes, and body tremors.

The Pennsylvania native was taken into custody at the scene and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on one count of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and one count of driving under the influence. A test for blood alcohol content allegedly returned a result of 0.008%, which is well below the legal threshold for assumed impairment of 0.08%. However, police say a drug recognition exam showed impairment, and urine testing results are still pending. He remains in custody in lieu of a bond of $15,500.
