Police Say One-Way Accident That Killed Two In Tampa Was The Result Of Drunk Driving

Tampa police say a Land O' Lakes man is responsible for two deaths after he allegedly drove the wrong way on a local street while drunk.

According to police, the 30-year-old man was driving the wrong way along the George J. Bean Parkway in the early morning hours of January 26 when his Jeep encountered a Ford sedan approaching from the opposite direction.

The impact was immense, as investigators estimate that neither driver diminished their speed prior to the wreck. Two men were within the Ford sedan, and they were both mortally injured in the incident. Few other details about the victims were made available by police due to the department's interpretation of Marsy's Law.

Meanwhile, witnesses say the defendant emerged from his vehicle shortly after the accident and appeared to be disoriented. They reported the smell of marijuana emanating from his person, and say he seemed lethargic with a droopy-eyed stare. In addition, officers on the scene say he wore beads and a paper wristband that indicated he had been involved in a recent social event not long before.

Per officers, the defendant said at the scene that he had consumed two beers four hours prior to the accident. They say his performance in field-sobriety tests was not up to par, and he was arrested at the scene.

Upon his arrival at the Hillsborough County Jail, the defendant gave permission for a vial of his blood to be drawn for testing purposes, and deputies say two breath tests run later that morning showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.081% and 0.083%, which were both just beyond Florida's legal limit.

The Texas native was charged with two counts each of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter. He remains in custody pending a bond of $150,000.
