Fines and penalties add up when you face a DUI

You were stopped by an officer who claimed that you were "driving all over the road." Your alleged reckless driving led the officer to stop you and ask you to take a Breathalyzer test.

Unfortunately, you did not pass the test. Your blood alcohol content (BAC) registered at .09%, and now you face a DUI charge. DUI charges can be costly. Here's what you should know.

How much can fines add up to be for a DUI?

The DUI fine schedule begins at $500 and up to $1,000 for a first offense. If your BAC was .15% or higher, then that will increase to $1,000 to $2,000. That's a pretty serious fine to begin with, but second convictions result in even higher fines.

Second convictions can cost as much as $2,000 with a minimum fine of $1,000. If your BAC was .15% or greater, then the fine is at least $2,000, but it can be as much as $4,000. There is also an increase in fines if you have a minor in your vehicle, with the minimum set at $1,000.

Just looking at first and second offenses, you can see that the fines you could face for a DUI are substantial.

Fines aren't the only risk with a DUI

DUI charges don't only come with a risk of fines. You can be imprisoned for up to six months on a first offense, and you could face up to nine months in prison for a second offense. Your vehicle will be impounded any time you face a DUI, unless your family has no other transportation.

The administrative penalties for a DUI alone can significantly impact your life. If you're facing a DUI, it's a smart move to find a way to defend yourself.
