St. Pete Man Facing Third DUI Charge In A Decade After High-Speed Chase In Pinellas County

A St. Petersburg man is facing his third set of drunk driving charges after deputies say he led them on a high-speed chase through Pinellas County.

Deputies say the 33-year-old man first came to their attention when his red Toyota ran a red light at 22nd Avenue and 49th Street N while traveling at over 100 miles per hour. A deputy gave pursuit, saying the vehicle continued through town at a high rate of speed, allegedly running at least three more red lights.

The man ultimately pulled into the parking lot of an apartment complex, where the deputy approached the driver. He said the man showed the telltale signs of alcohol intoxication when he approached him, including glassy eyes and slurred speech, and the defendant was taken into custody at that point.

The defendant was transported to the Pinellas County Jail and booked early the next morning on charges of driving under the influence and refusal to submit to testing. He was released after posting a bond of $650 later that day.

Local media reported that the arrest was but the latest of several the man has had in recent years for driving while drunk. Records show a 2012 arrest for drunk driving in which he allegedly tested for a blood-alcohol content of 0.13%. He pled no contest and received probation on those charges.

In early 2017 the defendant was arrested for DUI after being caught speeding. He refused to submit to blood-alcohol testing and he pled the charges down to reckless driving, for which he was again given probation.
