New Evidence Leads To Arrest Of Incarcerated Panama City Man To Face Charge In 2005 Murder

A man long thought to be responsible for a Regency Park burglary and murder in 2005 was finally charged with the crime after Pasco County authorities obtained new evidence and new test results on evidence collected at the time of the murder.

Deputies say someone broke into the home of a 79-year-old woman fourteen years ago and bludgeoned her and her dog to death before stealing money and prescription pills from the residence. Immediately of interest was a man charged with breaking into neighboring homes in prior days, allegedly robbing them of the same sort of items. Deputies say he also attacked an elderly man during one of the robberies, but he survived the encounter.

Though prosecutors were able to obtain a conviction and a 23-year sentence in prison on the other burglaries, investigators were unable to conclusively tie him to the murder. They continued to investigate the case and obtained a warrant to obtain hair samples from the inmate in 2009, and improvements in DNA technology allowed them to link the hair obtained from the inmate to DNA collected at the scene.

In addition to physical evidence, investigators obtained witnesses with new information on the case. Witnesses discovered in the interim told investigators that they saw the defendant that day with bloody clothing, saying that he had earlier killed a woman and her dog.

Still in custody and serving a sentence for the burglaries mentioned above, Pasco County deputies arrested the Kentucky native last week and booked him into jail on a single charge of premeditated murder. He continues to be held without bail on the charge.
