A Zephyrhills man is facing a DUI manslaughter charge after Florida Highway Patrol troopers say he caused a fatal car accident while drunk.
Troopers say the 36-year-old man was driving northbound on U.S. 301 south of Zephyrhills just after dusk last Thursday in a truck owned by his employer when he lost control of it and drifted onto the east shoulder.
Investigators say the defendant overcorrected, sending him into the southbound lanes of U.S. 301. The defendant then found himself in the path of a Honda sedan driven by a 30-year-old woman. Neither driver was able to avert a collision, and the two vehicles met nose-to-nose.
The woman’s injuries were grievous and she expired at the scene shortly after the collision. Meanwhile, troopers say the defendant was “combative” and declined to submit to a field-sobriety test and a blood draw. The defendant was taken into custody and booked into the Pasco County Jail on charges of DUI manslaughter and DUI property damage. He continues to be held in custody in lieu of a bond of $525,000.
