Zephyrhills Man Charged With DUI Manslaughter Allegedly On Drugs When He Caused Fatal Crash

Pasco County authorities say a Zephyrhills man was under the influence of drugs when he caused a car accident that turned fatal last week.

According to deputies, the 36-year-old man was driving his 2008 Lincoln MKZ on Friday afternoon when he approached a stop sign at Lynbrook Drive and Old Lakeland Highway (County Road 535). In the intersection at the time was the Ford F-150 driven by a 70-year-old Michigan man.

Rather than stopping for the sign, deputies say the MKZ proceeded into the intersection and rammed the F-150, sending it spinning out of control. The truck rolled, sending the Michigan man flying from the vehicle. Deputies confirmed that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

First responders transported the Michigan man to hospital, but his injuries were severe and he succumbed shortly after arrival.

Authorities did not describe the details that led them to their conclusion, but they say the other man was under the influence of an unspecified drug at the time of the accident. The Philadelphia native was arrested at the scene and transported to the Pasco County Jail. He was charged with DUI manslaughter and released later that day after posting a bond of $30,000.

According to local media, the defendant has a prior conviction for driving under the influence in 2011. He was found guilty of the charge and served one year of probation.
