Four Iraqi Men Designated By OFAC On Allegations Of Aiding Iran-Based Militia In Iraq Responsible For Dozens Of Deaths

The Federal governement last week issued sanctions against a quartet of Iraqi men it says have been leading or otherwise helping an Iran-backed militia that has engaged in serious human rights abuses in Iraq.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) says three of the men are leaders of the militia, which opened fire on peaceful protesters earlier this year. One man acts as Secretary General of the group, while his brother allegedly sat on the committee of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) proxies that approved acts of violence against protesters in order to intimidate them as well as any other dissenters.

The duo also allegedly had leading roles in an attack against an Iraqi government compound almost thirteen years ago. Once the smoke had cleared, five U.S. soldiers were dead, while another three were injured.

Their participation in the militia also allegedly includes participation in several forced disappearances, abductions, killings, and torture of Sunni Muslims in Iraq. One brother is also accused of participating in more direct means of ejecting Sunni Muslims from the area of Diyala Province four years ago, including targeted killings.

A third man was also allegedly a member of the IRGC-QF committee of proxies as well. He is accused of ordering assassinations and other violent suppressions of protesters earlier this year. Militants acting under his orders shot into a crowd of peaceful protesters, killing several.

The fourth designee is an Iraqi businessman and millionaire whom OFAC accuses of aiding the militia by way of paying bribes of Iraqi officials totaling several million dollars.
