A Tampa man is facing a murder charge after Hillsborough County authorities say he shot and killed a woman who had recently tried to end their relationship.
Deputies say a 55-year-old woman was leaving an apartment complex in Brandon at about half past eight last Wednesday when she was shot by a man who escaped the scene prior to the arrival of first responders. Witnesses say they saw a man speaking with her shortly before the shooting followed by the sound of several rounds fired from a handgun. The woman was taken to Brandon Regional Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
Approximately two hours after the shooting, a woman contacted 9-1-1 and told a dispatcher that a man told her he had just killed his girlfriend because he felt she was toying with his feelings. He also allegedly told her he’d considered harming himself as well. The caller said the suspect admitted to shooting his girlfriend four times and remaining to insure that she was indeed dead before leaving the scene.
Acting upon the information given them by the caller, Hillsborough County deputies located the man at his home the following afternoon. According to deputies, the suspect had a long list of prior encounters with law enforcement and the justice system stretching back almost thirty years, including serving several years in Florida prisons for violent crimes. Due to this, deputies dispatched a SWAT team and crisis negotiators to the suspect’s home in order to take him into custody.
The suspect was arrested without incident and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on one count of first-degree murder. He remains in custody without bond.
