OFAC Designates Iran Foreign Minister For Allegedly Supporting Terrorism And Human Rights Abuses

Last week the Federal government sanctioned the Iranian foreign minister due to allegations that he continues to act in support of the previously-sanctioned Supreme Leader of Iran.

On Wednesday the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced sanctions against the 59-year-old Iranian for acting as the Supreme Leader's spokesman around the world and aiding in implementing his policies.

According to OFAC, the new designee also heads up a ministry that cooperates with the IRGC-Qods Force (IRGC-QF), a previously-designated entity that OFAC alleges is heavily involved in terrorism and human rights abuses.

In addition, OFAC charges that the designee and his Ministry of Foreign Affairs routinely attempts to influence elections and funded efforts to do the same, often in conjunction with IRGC-QF. The Office also alleges that senior officials of the ministry worked to obtain the release of a pair of IRGC-QF operatives from custody in a third country by making illicit payments to judiciary officials in that country.

As with all OFAC sanctions, those designated by the Office are legally forbidden from exercising control over any property in the jurisdiction of the United States, and Americans are prohibited from conducting business with those individuals under designation.
