Florida sheriffs arrested for falsely planting drugs on people

Two Florida sheriffs were arrested this month for allegedly planting drugs, among other things, during minor traffic stop violations.

Earlier this month, a deputy from Jackson County, Florida, was arrested after he was caught on his body cam video, planting methamphetamine in a woman's truck. This happened last February and apparently, it was not his first time. He stopped people often on minor traffic issues and ended up charging them with drug offenses. Over 119 of the cases he handled were thrown out.

While reviewing this deputy's work, it was evident that he tailored his body cam videos and later amended his statements to fit the drug charges he arrested individuals for. After his arrests, many plaintiffs came forward once their cases were dropped and stated how this has affected them. He allegedly planted spoons, baggies of methamphetamine, marijuana, prescription pills, syringes, etc.

Throughout his case review, the assistant special agent from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, stated that his actions in planting drugs on innocent people was deliberate.

Another sheriff in Florida was arrested on Monday with similar charges. The Martin County sheriff arrested individuals on false drug offenses. Apparently, he claimed positive narcotic results for regular substances used to relieve headaches and some sand-based material. He is currently being charged with false statements, official misconduct, false imprisonment and tampering with evidence.

As these stories come to light and more cases are reviewed, it is clear how many people's lives are affected and displaced by the actions of these sheriffs. Plaintiffs are now coming forward and stating how they're still recovering from their arrests. One of the victims stated how they have lost custody of their child over their arrest. Others had extensive financial burdens placed onto them and their families.
