Yes, your DUI can have significant impacts on your life

Of all the things you could get into trouble for in Florida, a DUI is one of the more serious. A DUI charge with a conviction can land you in jail or prison and result in you having to pay heavy fines.

Although people get DUIs nearly every day, that doesn't mean that the authorities are likely to make light of them. DUIs are very serious. A single DUI charge has a fine of up to $1,000 for a first conviction. If a minor was in your vehicle or your blood alcohol content (BAC) was over .15%, then the fines are no less than $1,000 and no more than $2,000.

From there, the financial penalties increase each time you get a conviction. These are just the fines for a DUI, though. There are still other penalties. For instance, a first conviction comes with imprisonment of up to six months. Your vehicle can be impounded for 10 days.

What does it take to be released after a DUI arrest?

You'll remain at the police station until you are no longer impaired, you have a BAC of no more than .05% or you have been in custody for at least eight hours. Of course, if you still have a high BAC, then it's best to have someone else take you home instead of risking further penalties from the authorities.

Even if you're accused of a DUI, your attorney can help you fight the charges. Penalties can be altered and having a good attorney can impact the number of penalties and the overall cost of your DUI.
