OFAC Sanctions Network Of Belgian, Chinese, And Iranian Individuals And Businesses For Allegedly Supplying Parts To Iran's Nuclear Weapons Project

Last week the Federal government issued sanctions against a series of companies it says are complicit in supplying the Iranian government with material for its nuclear weapons program.

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) named four Iranian men, one Iranian woman, one Belgian firm, two Iranian firms, and four Chinese firms they say made up a network that obtained and delivered goods to Iran's Centrifuge Technology Company (TESA), which produces centrifuges for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran's (AEOI) uranium-enrichment efforts. TESA was previously sanctioned by the Treasury Department in late 2011.

Per OFAC, the network provided items controlled by multinational export control regime Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) without first progressing through the NSG's case-by-case approval. OFAC says the Iranian companies, in conjunction with the Belgium-based firm, organized hundreds of thousands of dollars in purchases of contraband goods for TESA, subsequently shipping the goods from China to Iran upon purchase.

OFAC says the network included individuals with a background in nuclear engineering and metallurgical engineering who aided in selecting the necessary aluminum parts for Iran's nuclear program. The individuals obtained the parts from manufacturers in China, and the Chinese firms arranged for shipment.

As with all such actions, the parties designated by OFAC are now legally forbidden from exercising their ownership rights to any property situated in the jurisdiction of the United States, and Americans are prohibited from conducting business with them.
