Tampa Man Charged With DUI Manslaughter After Fiery Crash

A Tampa man is facing DUI manslaughter charges after deputies say he initiated a fatal car accident while intoxicated last week.

Authorities allege the 24-year-old suspect was driving north on West Shore Boulevard when his Jeep Grand Cherokee failed to pass another vehicle in the left-turn lane. Leaving his own lane, the suspect’s vehicle allegedly crossed the median and entered the southbound lanes after barreling over several trees and shrubbery.

Per investigators, his vehicle was still traveling quickly when it struck another vehicle head-on. Both vehicles burst into flame, they say, and were fully engulfed when firefighters arrived at the scene.

According to deputies, neither the defendant nor the driver of the other vehicle sustained serious injuries. However, the defendant’s passenger was not so fortunate, as he expired at the scene of the accident.

Upon questioning, deputies say the defendant admitted to consuming alcoholic drink prior to the accident. They say he exhibited signs of intoxication at the scene as well. He was subsequently taken to the hospital where deputies say he volunteered for a blood test.

The defendant was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail just before dawn that morning on charges of DUI manslaughter, DUI with property damage, and vehicular homicide. Authorities say the blood-alcohol test at the hospital yielded results of 0.146% and 0.142%. The defendant was released the next evening after posting a bond of $208,000.
